Jakarta Proposes Three New Waste-to-Energy Plants to Tackle Waste

The Jakarta government plans to propose three Waste-to-Energy (PLTSa) plants as a long-term waste management strategy. The facilities are slated for Bantargebang in Bekasi, as well as Rorotan and Sunter in North Jakarta.

The construction will then take about 15 to 20 months

"Each plant has a daily capacity of 3,000 tons. In Bantargebang, this comprises 2,000 tons of newly produced waste and 1,000 tons of legacy waste from the Bantargebang Landfill facility," stated Jakarta Governor, Pramono Anung, at Tanah Abang Market Block B, Central Jakarta, Friday (3/13).

As for the Rorotan facility has 2,000 tons capacity of fresh waste per day, while the Sunter plant has 2,500 tons capacity per day.

City Ready to Build Two PLTSa Units, Pramono Confirms

"By so, if those plants and the Rorotan facility are operational, approximately 6,500 to 7,000 tons of Jakarta's daily waste will be managed," he explained.

Pramono also believes that this initiative will reduce the volume of waste landfilled at Bantargebang daily. The construction of these plants will take approximately 20 months.

"So, hopefully, by this May or June, we can sign the second batch (agreement). The construction will then take about 15 to 20 months," he emphasized.
